Relax, It's Only Paint!

Anyone who knows me know I have a major girl/fashion/lifestyle crush on the AMAZING Jenna Lyons, designer extraordinaire of J Crew. The stylish super-mama has been credited with reinventing the brand and has followers like Oprah herself, as well as Michelle Obama.

And so I don't really get all the fuzz it created when Jenna included this picture of herself and her son on a J Crew newsletter recently. So, yeah, he's a boy and sure they are painting their toenails together, but so what?? He is 6! God, if I ever have a son too right I will let him play with my make-up bag. Just like I am sure Nahla will be a dab hand helping daddy when it comes to stuff like changing tyres and fixing stuff around the house. As kids do. Some people are just so tightly wound!

Like psychiatrist Dr Keith Ablow told Fox News: "This is a dramatic example of the way that our culture is being encouraged to abandon all trappings of gender identity." Eh, or a mother playing and messing with her son and an innocent bottle of pink nail polish!

Media commentator Erin Brown of the Media Research Center in the US also had strong views, calling it "blatant propaganda celebrating transgendered children." OMG. Take a chill pill.
She wrote: "Not only is Beckett likely to change his favorite color as early as tomorrow, Jenna's indulgence (or encouragement) could make life hard for the boy in the future." Sure, because having your toenails painted can be super traumatic. Never mind a happy safe fun childhood in every other way, now the poor child will be confused forever.

Seems Hollywood mummies are a little more relaxed, luckily. And colorful mamas Gwen Stefani and Christina Aguilera are just two of the celebrity mothers that take pride in indulging their sons' requests for fancy manicures. Even Jennifer Lopez sees nothing wrong with it, insisting in an interview recently: OMG, it's just paint." Too right, J.Lo! And in fairness, David Beckham, who has been knows to sport a bit of polish himself, sure doesn't seem to gender confused to me!
