To Think I Ever Worried...

... that my heart was already stretched to capacity with love for Nahla. So how could I possibly have room in there to love another baby in the same way?! Take it from the newly enlightened: Hearts grow. Clearly. Because mine has doubled in size in just three little months. That is the power of love.

The Difference 5 Months Make

Having children will make you realize just how quickly time goes by. Trust me; scary stuff. On the left: Luca 7 months old inside my (HUGE) belly. On the right: My little love has already lived and breathed 3 whole months on the outside of my body. Somebody slow down time!

My Best Friend

If someone had told me that going from 1 to 2 babies would be more challenging than going from 0 to 1, I might have not believed it. I mean; Baby No. 1 turns your life upside down - in ways you pre-motherhood could have never imagined. But then; when Baby No. 2 makes his or hers arrival, you'll find that why you are utterly in love with your new little bundle, your mind will also still be firmly fixed on No. 1 - who, up until that very moment - has been the single most amazing and important thing in your life.

It is a struggle to make family-life work. And to balance time and cuddles between two babes, so that no-one is missing out, requires some serious juggling.

He Is Here!

Baby boy Luca Phoenix was born exactly one week ago this evening, on Sunday June 2nd - just one day after my own birthday. And he is beautiful. And amazing. And perfect. And I still cry and pinch myself at just how lucky a mummy I am. Two beautiful babies. Two perfect little people to raise and care for and share our lives with.

He kept us waiting 9 long days after my due-date before he decided to join us - and this mummy was slowly loosing her mind, being close to 10 months pregnant in the sweltering Oslo heat. But once the midwife put this big (4575 g/10 lbs 1 oz), dark haired and beautiful little boy on my chest, all was forgiven and forgotten.

He made our family grow. He made Nahla a big sister. He fitted so perfectly into our lives. I am happy, exhausted, delirious with joy and so very very blessed.

2,5 Yesterday...

... which makes me wonder; how has it been 2,5 years already??!! And in other ways; has she only been part of our lives for as little as 2,5 years??? How is that possible? I breathe her, I sleep her, I would die for her, and yet she is the person in my life that I have known for the shortest amount of time. That is motherhood for you, so all-consuming and empowering and crazy crazy good.

Motherhood

I read an article today in the Daily Mail newspaper where a quote about motherhood made me smile to myself in utter recognition:

"Motherhood; it can empower you with the strength of ten lionesses  - and bring you to your knees with bone-aching exhaustion."

So so true. And yet worth every minute of it. It's a magical thing, no doubt.

Bed Buddy

Oh, how we have been all girly and cuddly the last week when Daddy has been off on his little soccer-holiday! I am talking popcorn and Mickey Mouse on the TV, lunches out, cupcake-baking, hot chocolate for breakfast and last, but not least, the most snuggly lovely nights, where Nahla has been sleeping in Mummy's "big-bed" for the whole week!

And; for all you people so obsessed with either one end or the other of the "where does your baby sleep" debate, I just don't get it. Seriously. Nahla sleeps in her own cot-bed in her own room 9 nights of of 10. Has since we moved her cot in from our room when she was 1-ish. But some nights she is unsettled and I let her sleep in our bed. Other nights Nahla and Daddy have cuddle-time and Mummy sneaks off to the single bed in Nahla's room. Some nights she comes in to our bed and we lift her back again when she is asleep again.

I have never understood why it has to be one way or the other, why not just do whatever makes life easier - and what is best for your family? I LOVE sleeping next to my sleeping toddler - it is hands down the most lovely, amazing, bursting-with-love feeling in the world. And they are small for such a short short time, so I feel like it is the most precious thing. But I also love our freedom, our space in bed and her sleeping soundly in her own room.
When I fed Nahla myself until she was 7-8 months she mostly slept in our bed every night. It meant I could feed her easily without having to get out of bed, it was super-cosy and it meant that I NEVER had a single sleepless night since she was born - in fact, we have never had a sleepless night ever since having her. And partly I put that down to never stressing about anything. Because if it one thing I firmly believe, it is that stressed out parents makes for stressed out babies. So what if she sleeps in our bed one night? We just cherish it, because we know that 1: Tomorrow night she more than likely will be in her own bed again, and 2: In a couple of short little years she won't want to bunk in with Mummy and Daddy anymore.

I just have never gotten what all the stress is about when it comes to having babies. Like people fussing about traveling with kids. I have been on more than 150 flights with Nahla, mostly by myself, and sure my handbag is a little heavier with the extra little bits you need to bring, but so what? City-breaks with toddlers? Easy peasy. Beach-holidays? A bliss. Shopping trips into town? No worries. BF and I decided already when we were pregnant that we were not going to completely stop doing the things we love just because we now are going to be parents, and I think we have found a balance that works just right.

The amazing midwife who delivered Nahla told us to remember one thing the day we brought her home: That she had come in to our lives and should fit into it, not us trying to change ourselves to fit into hers. And so we did just that.

And as for Daddy arriving back home again tonight: I am excited about sharing a bed with just him again too!

Independent Eater

Sometimes - actually a lot of the time when you are a mother - you find you want to slow down time. Like this morning, when in the midst of the normal hectic let's-all-get-ready-for-our-days rush, I look over at my little love, and she is just sitting there quietly eating her cheerios. And she is so heartbreakingly amazing. And all I can think is: "Yikes, sure it was only yesterday I was feeding her myself, and look at her now!" That's not to say I am not loving her ability to do stuff herself now. Because that is off course as awesome as things come and have given me time to actually sit down and eat breakfast myself - and maybe, just maybe, catch some news before our day begins. But still; my little baby is growing up FAR TOO QUICKLY!

Disney Days

10 years ago I visited Disney World in Orlando Florida, and much as it was amazing and spectacular and fun, nothing can truly compare to seeing Disney's magical place through the eyes of your 2,5 year old, which I got to do on Monday, when Nahla and I, along with my family, went to visit Disneyland in Paris. Nahla, although much too young to go on most of the rides in the park, was electric with joy and excitement all day. She went on the spinning teacups till Mummy could take it no more. She rode on magical horses and visited Cinderella's castle. She ate way too much ice cream and lollipops and candy-floss and watched the parade from the best seat in the house, my aunt's shoulders. We spent money like it was going out of fashion and had so much fun that all I can say is: Is it too soon to go back in a month or so?! Sometimes the best part of having children, is being allowed to indulge in days like these, and see just how fun it can be!

Baby's First Bath

This video just blew my mind. The gentle hands and amazing skills of this French nurse, giving this baby its first bath, it humbling stuff. According to the text, this method is called Thalasso Bain Bebe and was developed by pediatric nurse Sonia Rochel. It actually takes longer than this little video, about 10-15 minutes, and I was just transfixed by how calm and relaxed this baby was, and how he seemed to enjoy himself in the water.  However, there is a strong warning on the video not to try this method at home, that this is done by very skilled professionals. But the whole atmosphere, the gentle music, the warm water, the softness of it all, surely those can be applied when you are going to bathe your little bundle those precious first few times. So so sweet. Babies are such miracles, really.

Little Friends...

... makes their Mummies hearts ache with pride and love! It is pretty magical to watch your our daughters' budding friendship when you yourself have been friends for as long as you can remember. Everything is secondary to family and friends!

Egghunts...

... who knew they could be so much fun?! Nahla, who went on her very first egg-hunt this year, at a very fun and family friendly farm in Killarney, thought this was just the most amazing thing ever, and put her little heart into collecting as many eggs as possible in her little (oh-so-cute!) bucket. And as for Mummy and Daddy, who stood at the edge of the field watching our little egg-collector, I think it is safe to say we both teared up a little! The cuteness of it all!

Little Snapshots...

... from our Easter weekend! I hope everyone's holiday was as sweet as ours! xxx

My little Bakerella...

... brought home her very first own-made crispy buns from playschool on Thursday - and seemed totally impressed with her own efforts! Needless to say, Mummy was chuffed too! It was the gummybear that did it for me, so freakin' cute!

"What Is It Like Being A Mum?"

Many of my friends are mothers themselves, and when I found out Nahla was on the way, I was kind of "in the middle", meaning that roughly half of my friends had crossed over into to motherhood, and the other half had yet to take the plunge. Or meet someone they wanted to take the plunge with, for that matter.

I remember having so many questions to those of my friends who had already had babies. Mostly then about pregnancy itself. Or childbirth, which seemed like this huge big deal back then, like "will I make it or not" type stuff.

It turned out there were more important things I should have asked about. Stuff that matters beyond giving birth - which was sore, no doubt, but a piece of cake when you think about the reward.

When my yet-to-have-children friends ask me what it is really like, having a baby, being a mum, I often struggle to put this magnificent life-altering thing into words. Motherhood means so many big things. And a million little ones.

1. It means never again being able to open a newspaper, or watch a movie, or the news, and not think: "What if that was my child?" when you see images of sick, starving or injured children. Because as a mother, you now can feel what these women must feel, and it breaks your mummy-heart.

2. It means every plane-crash and house-fire and famine will tug at your heart-strings, will make you weep for those mothers who lost their babies, or children who are now motherless.

2. It makes you see the world in a new way. Suddenly spending the weekend at a blustery playground, or wet and muddy duck-pond seems like the best idea in the world. Who knew?!

3. It may mean you can cross a good night sleep of your to-do list for a long time, and yet even the earliest of Sunday mornings can not even make you regret having that baby.

4. It means being tied to another human in a way you really cannot do justice when trying to describe it with words.

5. It means you may still care about your career, or your style, or your hobbies just like you did pre motherhood, but never again will they come first. It is just the way we are designed as mothers.

6. It means, much as you love your career and your job, days will come when you will be sitting in a meeting, and suddenly start thinking about the sweet sweet smell of your baby. And it will take all your willpower not to rush out and home, just to make sure your little heart is OK.

7. It means finding yourself up in the pitch dark of the night, worrying about your sick child, wiping vomit of every surface in your house or franticly googling "red dots" and "signs of meningitis" at 3 A.M.

8. It will mean that much as you love fashion and looking immaculate and put together, there will be days when all you can manage is jeans and Converse. And you will feel OK about it.

9. It might mean that your relationship will have to sometimes take the back-seat. Romantic weekends might have to yield for sick children, or lack of babysitters, or just pure exhaustion. But you will realize if it is meant to be, it will be strong enough to survive all this - and grow better.

10. It could mean having to sacrifice that promotion. Or the ability to work those crazy hours to please your psycho boss. And that is Ok. You are needed elsewhere.

11. It means that you will, like mothers everywhere, drop everything and run when you hear their crying voice: "Mummy!"

12. It means you will have a million little decisions to make every day - and that will always make you wonder: "Am I making the right one? Is this what is best for my baby?"

13. It means you will feel like you are loosing your mind. Sometimes several times a day.

14. It means you will question your ability and your strength and your capacity. But you will grow more confident every day. And you will want to share your Mommy-wisdom with other moms.

15. It means you will fall in love with your boyfriend or husband all over again, for reasons you may pre-babies find terribly un-romantic. No-one can tell you before you have children how your knees will go weak at the sight of your partner gently cradling your baby. Or dusting powder on a freshly cleaned baby-butt. Seriously, heart-melting stuff.

16. It means you will experience loving so hard it actually hurts your heart.

17. It means your home will never again look perfectly immaculate. And yet you will grow to love the lego hiding in the carpet, and the plastic tiaras and spongy dinosaurs you find scattered across your dining room. Nothing makes a house look more like a home than the visible signs of children living there.

18. It means suddenly feeling a bond with women and mothers everywhere. Women who fight for better schools. Or health systems. Or campaign to end drink-driving. Or better school-dinners. You will want to hug them all for making the world a better place.

19. It means finding joy in tiny little things that before baby you never even put much thought to.

20. It means that for the very first time, maybe, you start fearing your own mortality. That suddenly taking a plane-ride by your self, or driving when the roads are dark and wet, will make you cold with the fear that something might happen to you. Because the thought of your children not having you around is suddenly present in your worst nightmares. Because who could love them like you? Who could make them feel as safe and loved and special and protected as their mum? You will want to grow old, not just to see your dreams come true, but to be there when theirs do.

21. It could mean needing your family in a whole new way, because baby-sitters don't grow on trees, and it feels much better for your heart leaving your precious baby with family.

22. It means you will develop multi-tasking skills of super-human capacity.

23. It could mean days where the only adult conversation you have had is with the poor lady in the shop, or guy who sells you your take-away coffee. And they WILL look at you funny when you try and strike up a conversation, not knowing that all you have said or heard all day is "goo-goo-ga-ga."

24. It means you will make new friends and may become less attached to others. Motherhood can also mean days when you will feel lonely and isolated, and you will need other Mommy-friends who understands.

25. It will mean love. Crazy, all-consuming, never-ending, heart-breaking and perfect love. Your heart will never be the same. Your body might never either - and yet you will accept this. You will cry more, laugh more, shout more, run around more and love more than you ever thought possible. And you will not regret a single second of it.
